Troubleshoot a Windows black screen with or without a cursor by checking display input, brightness, graphics state and startup.

Try these checks in order

Save work if possible. Complete one check at a time and retest the original symptom. Stop when the issue is resolved.

01Check display power and input

For a desktop, check monitor power, input and cable seating. For a laptop, raise brightness and check physical display/privacy controls.

02Try a graphics reset

If Windows may be running, press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B once to request a graphics-driver reset. Test an external display only if available.

03Use recovery if startup fails

If the desktop or sign-in never appears, use Windows-supported recovery and model-specific guidance rather than reinstalling immediately.

How to read the result

A monitor input issue, Windows shell issue and no-boot condition require different fixes. Record when the black screen appears and whether another display helps.

Separate a display fault from a startup fault

If the monitor reports 'No signal,' check the input and cable path before changing Windows settings. If the screen is black but a cursor appears, Windows may have reached a later startup stage. If a graphics reset restores the picture, note the display driver and recent changes; if no firmware logo appears on any display, software troubleshooting may not be the right next step.

Before changing more settings: Note whether the manufacturer logo appears, whether a cursor is visible, any monitor message, and whether the display works on another input or screen.

Important safety note

Do not repeatedly power-cycle a computer that may be completing a firmware update. Stop if there is physical damage, liquid exposure or unsafe heat.

Model-specific reference note

Windows menus and recovery options vary by version and device. Use the exact Windows version, device model and error message when checking your next step. This guide keeps the diagnostic steps together so you can continue troubleshooting without leaving SafeCode.
