Troubleshoot a slow PC by checking startup apps, resource use, storage, updates and unwanted software.

Try these checks in order

Save work if possible. Complete one check at a time and retest the original symptom. Stop when the issue is resolved.

01Check Task Manager

Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc while the slowdown is happening. Compare CPU, Memory and Disk use and note which recognized process stays busy.

02Review startup and storage

Disable only startup apps you recognize and do not need. Check free space in Settings and let legitimate update activity finish.

03Separate local and online tasks

Test a local file and an online task separately. Use official Windows and manufacturer tools for updates; change one thing at a time.

How to read the result

A process or pattern matching the delay is a useful lead, not proof. If storage errors or file corruption appear, protect data before deeper repair.

Find the bottleneck before tuning anything

If one process stays near the top of CPU, Memory or Disk while the slowdown happens, investigate that app or workload first. If the figures look normal but websites alone are slow, compare a local file with an online task and test the network separately. If the whole PC pauses while the drive reports errors, treat it as a data-safety issue rather than a routine performance cleanup.

Before changing more settings: Note what felt slow, when it started, the process using the most resources, available storage, and whether a restart changes the symptom.

Important safety note

If a drive clicks, disappears or reports I/O errors, stop unnecessary scans and writes. Stop using a device with a swollen battery, burning smell or unsafe heat.

Model-specific reference note

Windows menus and recovery options vary by version and device. Use the exact Windows version, device model and error message when checking your next step. This guide keeps the diagnostic steps together so you can continue troubleshooting without leaving SafeCode.
