Respond safely to fake virus alerts, scam support warnings, browser redirects and suspicious extensions.

Try these checks in order

Save work if possible. Complete one check at a time and retest the original symptom. Stop when the issue is resolved.

01Do not call the pop-up number

Do not grant remote access, install unsolicited tools or share one-time codes. Close the tab or browser normally if possible.

02Review permissions and extensions

Remove notification permission for sites you do not recognize and review browser extensions.

03Secure accounts if access was shared

Use Windows Security or an already trusted security product. If you shared access or payment details, secure accounts from a trusted device and contact your bank if needed.

How to read the result

A browser notification scam can look alarming without proving infection. The risk changes if you installed software or shared credentials, remote access or payment details.

Identify whether the warning is a webpage or installed software

If the warning appears only in one browser tab and asks you to call a number, install a tool or allow notifications, do not follow its instructions. Close the tab without calling the displayed number, then check browser notification permissions and extensions. If redirects continue across sites or browsers, use trusted built-in security scans and review recent installations.

Before changing more settings: Record the browser, site or notification source, recent extension/app installs, and whether the warning returns after the browser closes. Do not call numbers shown in pop-ups or share remote-access codes.

Important safety note

If ransomware is encrypting files, disconnect the affected PC from networks and avoid connecting backup drives until you have a response plan.
