Diagnose random computer freezes by checking whether one app hangs, resource use spikes or the whole system locks.

Try these checks in order

Save work if possible. Complete one check at a time and retest the original symptom. Stop when the issue is resolved.

01Check resource use

If possible, open Task Manager and note CPU, Memory and Disk use. End only an app you recognize and understand; unsaved work may be lost.

02Repeat a simple task

Note whether one file, app or device triggers the freeze. Check airflow and recent software or driver changes.

03Compare crash history

Use Windows Reliability Monitor or Event Viewer to compare failure times, treating log entries as clues rather than proof.

How to read the result

A freeze tied to one app or file points toward that workload; system-wide freezes may involve drivers, storage, memory, heat or system components.

Check whether the whole PC or one app is stuck

If only one application stops responding and the rest of Windows still works, focus on that app, file or plugin. If the pointer, keyboard and all apps stop together, compare temperatures, resource use and recent driver changes. Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer can provide clues, but one log entry alone does not establish the cause.

Before changing more settings: Record the app or task running, whether the mouse and keyboard still respond, how long the freeze lasts, and any nearby Reliability Monitor event.

Important safety note

If freezes coincide with drive clicking, storage warnings, corruption or extreme heat, avoid prolonged tests and prioritize data safety.

Model-specific reference note

Windows menus and recovery options vary by version and device. Use the exact Windows version, device model and error message when checking your next step. This guide keeps the diagnostic steps together so you can continue troubleshooting without leaving SafeCode.
