Troubleshoot a built-in or USB webcam missing from Windows or unavailable in a meeting app.
Try these checks in order
Save work if possible. Complete one check at a time and retest the original symptom. Stop when the issue is resolved.
01Check privacy controls
Open the shutter and check the laptop camera key or switch. Connect a USB webcam directly for the first test.
02Test Windows access
Check camera privacy settings, close other apps using the camera and select the correct device in the meeting app.
03Check device detection
Review Device Manager and official driver updates if the camera is absent throughout Windows. Compare a second app.
How to read the result
A camera visible in Windows but missing in one app points toward application configuration; a device absent everywhere needs detection and hardware checks.
Check privacy, detection and app selection separately
If the camera works in Windows but not a meeting app, close other apps that may be using it and select the correct camera in that application. If no app can see the camera, check the shutter/key, privacy settings and Device Manager. A USB camera that works on another port or computer provides a useful comparison.
Before changing more settings: Note the camera model, shutter/privacy-key position, whether it appears in Device Manager, which apps fail, and any error message.
Do not bypass privacy controls or continue using a physically damaged or liquid-exposed device.
Model-specific reference note
