Check workload, ventilation and fan behavior when a PC becomes hot, noisy, throttles or shuts down.
Try these checks in order
Save work if possible. Complete one check at a time and retest the original symptom. Stop when the issue is resolved.
01Reduce workload and clear vents
Close unnecessary workloads and place the computer on a hard, flat surface with vents clear.
02Check resource use and fan sounds
Use Task Manager to identify sustained load. Note grinding fans or a fan that does not behave normally.
03Use appropriate diagnostics
Use manufacturer diagnostics only if the device remains stable. Arrange physical service if internal cooling may be failing.
How to read the result
High fan activity under load can be normal; repeated shutdowns or excessive heat at idle are not. Track workload before assuming a component failed.
Treat sudden heat and ordinary fan noise differently
Fans becoming louder during a game or update can be expected, but repeated thermal warnings, shutdowns or heat at idle need attention. Check vents and workload without opening the power supply or battery pack. If the laptop has a swollen battery, burning smell or extreme heat, shut it down when safe and stop using it instead of running more tests.
Before changing more settings: Note the device model, workload and timing, any thermal warning, fan behavior at idle, and whether shutdowns happen under load.
Shut down if there is a burning smell, smoke, swollen battery or dangerous heat. Do not open a power supply or puncture a battery.
Model-specific reference note
Windows menus and recovery options vary by version and device. Use the exact Windows version, device model and error message when checking your next step. This guide keeps the diagnostic steps together so you can continue troubleshooting without leaving SafeCode.
