Check laptop charging, adapters, battery limits and status messages before replacing parts.

Try these checks in order

Save work if possible. Complete one check at a time and retest the original symptom. Stop when the issue is resolved.

01Check adapter and outlet

Use the charger recommended for the exact model and inspect the cable and connector. Try a known-good outlet.

02Read battery status

Check the manufacturer's utility for charge limits and battery health diagnostics where available.

03Inspect port and heat

Look for visible damage without inserting tools. If the port is loose or the adapter heats excessively, stop using it and seek repair.

How to read the result

A charge limit, incompatible adapter and degraded battery can produce similar symptoms. The model-specific report and a known-good power source help separate them.

Check the charger, battery limit and temperature in order

If the laptop works on its correct adapter but the percentage does not rise, check manufacturer battery-health settings and any charge limit that intentionally stops near 60–80%. If the adapter is not recognized or power drops when its connector moves, inspect the adapter and port without forcing them. Swelling, leaking or unusual heat means stop using the battery.

Before changing more settings: Note the laptop model, charger wattage/model, charge percentage and message, whether it runs on adapter power, and any battery-health warning.

Important safety note

Stop charging if the battery is swollen, leaking, unusually hot or smells chemical. Never press or puncture a swollen battery.

Model-specific reference note

Windows menus and recovery options vary by version and device. Use the exact Windows version, device model and error message when checking your next step. This guide keeps the diagnostic steps together so you can continue troubleshooting without leaving SafeCode.
